A general assistant and a dedicated image service compared for generating and revising still images—not video production or a universal quality ranking. This guidance is based on company pages linked from the profiles below.

Which tool fits your work?
Start with ChatGPT if
You want to create and revise images conversationally inside a general assistant you already use for research, writing, files, or code.
Look elsewhere if: You need a creative-suite handoff, published fixed image quotas, or selection edits guaranteed to stay inside the highlighted area.
You want a dedicated still-image workflow with image and style references, a web editor, and Standard-or-higher unlimited image generation in Relax Mode.
Look elsewhere if: You need a free web or Discord plan, private-by-default creation without Pro or Mega plus a private creation surface, or a published customer-content no-training promise or provider commitment to cover output IP claims.
A free plan is available. In the US, Go is $8 monthly and Plus is $20 monthly. Pro is $100 monthly for 5× Plus usage or $200 monthly for 20×. Go, Plus, and Pro are billed monthly only. ChatGPT Business standard seats are $25 per user monthly or $20 per user monthly when billed annually, with a two-seat minimum. Usage limits apply.
Basic is $10 monthly, Standard $30, Pro $60, and Mega $120. Annual subscriptions are paid upfront at $96, $288, $576, and $1,152 respectively. Midjourney does not offer a free trial on its website or Discord; a limited trial is available in the separate niji·journey mobile app.

Which creation workflow fits the rest of the work?
Start with ChatGPT when images should stay in the same conversation as research, writing, files, or code. It creates and edits images on web, iOS, and Android. Start with Midjourney when the work belongs in a dedicated image workflow on its website or Discord. Most Midjourney features are available in both surfaces, but its Editor is web-only and adds inpainting, pan, zoom, reframing, layers, and edits to uploaded images.
ChatGPT supports conversational edits, uploaded source images, selection-based edits, and aspect-ratio controls; OpenAI warns that a highlighted selection may be imprecise and an edit can extend outside it. Midjourney offers a web Editor and Style References for guiding overall qualities such as color, medium, texture, and lighting rather than copying objects or people. These documented controls do not establish which service follows a brief or preserves a subject, layout, or style more reliably. Test the same representative prompt, reference, and two follow-up edits in the exact plan and model before choosing.
Which plan covers the amount of iteration you expect?
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on every tier. Its pricing page calls Free image generation limited and slower, Go more image creation, Plus more complex and accurate image creation, and Pro unlimited and faster subject to abuse guardrails, without publishing fixed image counts. Midjourney Basic is $10 monthly with 3.3 Fast GPU hours; Standard is $30 with 15 Fast hours and unlimited image generation in Relax Mode; Pro is $60 with 30 Fast hours and Relax; Mega is $120 with 60 Fast hours and Relax. Fast time resets monthly without rollover, while Relax wait times vary with demand. Do not convert Midjourney GPU hours or either provider's access labels into a fixed image count or speed promise; estimate a normal month's prompts, references, revisions, and discarded results.
For individual ChatGPT services, OpenAI may use content for training unless the user opts out; Business and Enterprise inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. OpenAI's individual terms assign output to the user as between the user and OpenAI to the extent permitted by law, but say output may not be unique and the user remains responsible for it. OpenAI separately describes agreement-conditional output IP-claim coverage for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare, not Business. Midjourney creations are public and remixable by default. Stealth requires Pro or Mega, does not hide work posted in public Discord channels, and does not retroactively hide old work. Midjourney's terms say users own generated assets subject to the agreement and third-party rights, require Pro or Mega for companies above $1 million in annual revenue, grant Midjourney a perpetual and sublicensable license to inputs and outputs, disclaim non-infringement warranties, and leave rights and suitability with the user. Its privacy policy lists prompts and uploaded images as personal data and says data may be used to improve the service, but it does not say whether customer content trains Midjourney's generative models. Treat that training use—and public provider coverage for output IP claims—as unknown unless your agreement answers it.
