Questions to answer before choosing

  1. 01

Where should image creation and editing happen?

Start with ChatGPT when image creation should stay in the same conversation as research, writing, files, or code. ChatGPT Images creates new images and edits generated or uploaded images. Start with Firefly when image work should continue through Firefly and compatible Adobe Creative Cloud products, or when you want to choose among Adobe and partner models. Firefly currently offers OpenAI GPT Image models as partner options, so access to an OpenAI image model is not exclusive to ChatGPT; the host workflow, plan, and terms still differ.

How controlled do revisions and references need to be?

ChatGPT supports conversational edits, an uploaded source image, selection-based edits, and aspect-ratio controls. OpenAI warns that selection highlights are not always precise and edits may extend beyond the selected area. Firefly's current GPT Image guide documents a Subject upload for GPT Image and up to six reference images for GPT Image 1.5, alongside Firefly settings. Those are documented controls, not evidence that either product preserves a subject, layout, or style more reliably. Test the same representative image and two follow-up edits in the exact plan and model before choosing.

Which plan covers the image volume you expect?

OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on every tier. Its pricing page describes Free image generation as limited and slower, Go as offering more image creation, Plus as offering more complex and accurate image creation, and Pro as unlimited and faster subject to abuse guardrails; it does not publish fixed image counts for those plans. Adobe's free Firefly plan has limited daily generations. Firefly Standard is $9.99 monthly with 2,000 monthly credits and unlimited standard image features; partner-model access and credit use vary. ChatGPT's relative access labels and Adobe's credits are not equivalent, so estimate a normal month's prompts, references, revisions, and discarded results rather than comparing the labels directly.

Which data and output terms fit client work?

For individual ChatGPT services, OpenAI may use content for training unless the user opts out; Business and Enterprise inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. OpenAI's individual terms assign output to the user as between the user and OpenAI to the extent permitted by law, but say output may not be unique and the user remains responsible for it. OpenAI separately says its indemnification obligations under the governing agreement extend to ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare customers for certain third-party IP claims involving output, subject to listed exclusions; its Service Terms do not name ChatGPT Business in that coverage. Adobe says content in its apps is not used to train Adobe or partner generative AI models; using a partner model sends that provider the prompt and reference files needed for generation. Adobe applies Content Credentials when Firefly-generated content is downloaded or exported. Ownership or commercial-use permission is not IP indemnity. Adobe separately documents conditional coverage only when the signed agreement, model, feature, surface, plan, and export event qualify; beta, trial, and non-Adobe-model features are excluded unless separate partner-model coverage applies. Check the exact model and agreement before client delivery.
