Questions to answer before choosing

  1. 01

Should image generation and final delivery stay in one workspace?

Start with Canva when the final image must continue into a presentation, social graphic, campaign layout, or other design inside Canva's editor, with Brand Kit, Magic Layers, photo editing, resizing, and delivery in the same workspace. Start with Midjourney when generation and image revisions should use its dedicated website or Discord workflow; its web-only Editor accepts uploaded images and supports selection edits, pan, zoom, reframing, layers, and retexture. The tools can be complementary, but the cited pages do not document a direct integration. If you plan to generate or revise in Midjourney and finish in Canva, verify the representative file handoff. That adds another service and a handoff. These documented workflows do not establish that one is easier or produces better images.

Which revision and reference controls need to work in your account?

Canva's overview lists Magic Layers, photo editing, and Resize under features available now; it describes Magic Layers as turning AI designs into editable layouts. It separately marks conversational Canva AI 2.0 updates Coming Soon, while the launch announcement called AI 2.0 a research preview and said general availability would roll out over the following weeks. Confirm which AI 2.0 controls are active in your account. Midjourney's Editor supports targeted changes, while Style References guide overall qualities such as color, medium, texture, and lighting rather than copying objects or people. These company-described controls do not establish which service preserves subjects, layouts, or styles more reliably. Test the same representative prompt, reference, and two follow-up edits in the exact plans before choosing.

Which usage model fits the amount of iteration you expect?

Canva estimates that Pro's shared monthly AI allowance can cover up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium, or 20 Ultra uses. Those are alternative capacities from one shared pool, not additive quotas, and Canva calls its usage limits operational controls rather than fixed entitlements. Pro can add a recurring AI Pass; the public page does not state its price and says premium AI can continue with short pauses after the Pass allowance is exhausted. Midjourney Basic includes 3.3 Fast GPU hours monthly. Standard includes 15 Fast hours and unlimited image generation in Relax Mode. Fast time resets without rollover, while Relax wait times vary with demand. Canva uses, Midjourney GPU hours, and Relax access are different units, so do not convert them into a fixed image count or speed promise.

Which privacy and output terms fit client material?

Canva says its privacy settings control whether content may improve its AI services; Business, Teams, and Enterprise content, plus content from students using Canva Education, is not used for that purpose. Inputs may still be shared with technology partners to provide an AI feature. Canva's AI terms say that, as between you and Canva and where law permits, you own output, but outputs may not be unique and Canva library content or third-party apps can carry separate terms. Midjourney creations are public and remixable by default. Stealth is available only on Pro or Mega; for full privacy, use it on the web Create page, in Discord direct messages, or in a private Discord server because public Discord channels remain visible. Midjourney's terms require Pro or Mega for asset ownership by companies above $1 million in annual revenue, grant Midjourney a perpetual and sublicensable license to inputs and outputs, and disclaim non-infringement warranties. Its privacy policy does not say whether customer content trains its generative models. Treat that training use as unknown. These terms do not establish commercial safety or provider coverage for an IP claim; check the signed agreement before client delivery.
