Which tool fits your work?

Start with Midjourney if

You want a dedicated still-image workflow with image and style references, a web editor, and Standard-or-higher unlimited image generation in Relax Mode.

Look elsewhere if: You need a free web or Discord plan, private-by-default creation without Pro or Mega plus a private creation surface, or a published customer-content no-training promise or provider commitment to cover output IP claims.

Questions to answer before choosing

  1. 01

Which workflow should hold generation and revisions?

Start with Firefly when image generation and editing should continue through Firefly and compatible Adobe Creative Cloud products, or when you want selectable Adobe and partner models in one Adobe workflow. Start with Midjourney when you want its dedicated website or Discord image workflow. A Midjourney subscription covers both surfaces and most features are available in each, but its full Editor is web-only. That Editor supports Midjourney and uploaded images, selection-based edits, pan and zoom, resize and aspect-ratio changes, layers, and retexture. These documented surfaces do not establish that one is easier or produces better images.

How should references and follow-up edits be tested?

Firefly's exact reference controls depend on the selected model. Its documented GPT Image partner-model path accepts a Subject reference and, with GPT Image 1.5, up to six reference images; using a partner model sends the required prompt and reference inputs to that provider. Midjourney's Style References guide overall qualities such as color, medium, texture, and lighting rather than copying objects or people, while its Editor supports targeted revisions. These controls do not prove brief adherence or consistency across revisions. Test the same representative prompt, reference, and two follow-up edits in the exact plans and models before choosing.

Which plan fits the amount of iteration you expect?

Adobe's free Firefly plan has limited daily generations. Firefly Standard is $9.99 monthly with 2,000 monthly credits and unlimited standard image features; partner models use credits at model-specific rates. Midjourney Basic is $10 monthly with 3.3 Fast GPU hours. Standard is $30 with 15 Fast hours and unlimited image generation in Relax Mode. Fast time resets monthly without rollover, while Relax requests queue and wait times vary. Adobe credits and Midjourney GPU hours are different units, so do not convert either into a fixed image count or speed promise. Estimate a normal month's prompts, references, revisions, and discarded results instead.

Which privacy and output terms fit client work?

Adobe says content in its apps is not used to train Adobe or partner generative AI models; using a partner model sends that provider the prompt and reference files needed for generation. Adobe applies Content Credentials when Firefly-generated content is downloaded or exported. Its output IP-claim coverage is conditional on the agreement, model, feature, surface, plan, and export event; beta, trial, and non-Adobe-model features are excluded unless separate partner-model coverage applies. Midjourney creations are public and remixable by default. Stealth is available only on Pro or Mega; for full privacy, use it on the web Create page, in Discord DMs, or in a private Discord server because public Discord channels remain visible. Midjourney's terms require Pro or Mega for asset ownership by companies above $1 million in annual revenue, grant Midjourney a perpetual and sublicensable license to inputs and outputs, and disclaim non-infringement warranties. Its privacy policy does not say whether customer content trains its generative models, and its public terms do not promise provider coverage for output IP claims. Treat both as unknown unless your agreement answers them; this is not legal advice.
