Claude web search is available on all plans and adds direct citations when it uses web information. Claude's separate Research mode requires Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, requires web search to be turned on, and can use conversation limits faster because it retrieves multiple sources. Gemini Deep Research requires sign-in and age 18 or older. All users can use its Thinking model for reports; Google AI Pro and Ultra users get higher report limits and can use Pro. Compare the exact research modes and plans you would use rather than treating an ordinary searched answer as equivalent to a multi-search report.

Anthropic's guide does not document a Research run with the web disabled, so do not assume connected sources can replace web search. Gemini Deep Research includes Google Search by default, but you can deselect it and use selected Gmail, Drive, uploaded files, or NotebookLM notebooks instead. Gmail and Drive require Gemini's Google Workspace connection. Start with the source boundary the work requires, then verify that the exact account can access it.

Those statements do not establish that every claim is cited or that each citation is correct. Google's Deep Research guide documents source selection and an editable research plan, but does not promise a source link for every report or claim. Its general Gemini help says not all responses include related links or sources, so Deep Research citation completeness is unknown—not evidence that citations are absent. Give both products the same representative question and conflicting sources. Require each decision-changing claim to identify an original source, then open it and check that it supports the claim.

Its upload guide calls the project file count unlimited but says total content must fit the context window; its separate RAG guide says projects nearing that window can expand capacity by up to 10× by retrieving only material judged relevant. The two pages do not reconcile that wording. Claude processes text and visual elements in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer, then text only through 1,000 pages. Gemini accepts up to 10 files per prompt, subject to availability, with a 100 MB limit for each non-video file. Google's upload guide does not state whether Gemini analyzes visual elements embedded in PDFs, so that remains unknown from the linked sources. Google lists context windows of 32,000 tokens without an AI plan, 128,000 on Plus, and 1 million on Pro or Ultra, and warns that content beyond the window can be missed. Capacity is not proof of complete coverage. Test the same representative long file on the exact plans and check known facts near the beginning, middle, and end.

Claude's Research guide describes a cited answer but does not document an equivalent one-click research-report export, so treat that workflow as unknown rather than absent. Separately, Claude can create downloadable XLSX, PPTX, DOCX, PDF, and PNG files. Anthropic specifically documents direct Google Drive saving for XLSX, PPTX, DOCX, and PDF. That environment caps each upload and download at 30 MB. Choose based on the handoff you actually need, and test whether the resulting file preserves the citations you intend to audit.

Google says saved activity is used to improve services, including training generative AI models, and a subset of chats is reviewed by people; turning Keep Activity off blocks the Google Workspace connection. For Claude Free, Pro, and Max, Anthropic says chats may be used when the user chooses model improvement, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit training opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded. Raw connector content such as Google Drive data is excluded from model-improvement data, but content can be included if it is copied directly into the Claude conversation. Set the controls before adding private research material; neither company's pages establish that a personal plan fits every sensitive use case.
