ChatGPT vs Claude for source-backed research

Choose between ChatGPT and Claude for source-backed research by checking the research mode, source controls, audit trail, report handoff, plan access, and private-source data settings you need—not model quality in general. This guidance is based on company pages linked from the profiles below.

Questions to answer before choosing

  1. 01

Are you comparing ordinary web search or a multi-search research report?

ChatGPT Search is broadly available, while ChatGPT Deep Research availability and usage vary by plan and country or territory; an in-product counter shows remaining research tasks. Claude web search is available on all plans. Claude's separate Research mode requires Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, requires web search to be turned on, and can use normal conversation limits faster because it retrieves multiple sources. Compare the exact modes and plans you would use rather than treating an ordinary searched answer as equivalent to a multi-search report.

Which sources must the run use, and when can you steer it?

ChatGPT Deep Research can use the public web, uploaded files, and enabled apps. It can restrict web research to named sites or domains, or prioritize those sites while still searching the wider web. OpenAI also documents an editable plan before the run, progress updates, interruption to refine the focus, and source-access changes while it runs. Claude Research requires web search and can add connected Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs. Anthropic tells users to steer the research through the prompt, but its guide does not document a named-site-only restriction, an editable pre-run plan, or equivalent mid-run source-access controls. Treat those Claude controls as unknown, not absent, and verify any strict source boundary on the exact account.

Can you audit the source trail for every decisive claim?

OpenAI says all ChatGPT Deep Research outputs include citations or source links, and its report view includes a Sources used section plus activity history. Anthropic says Claude Research produces answers with easy-to-check citations and that web-search responses provide direct citations when they use web information. These company pages do not establish that every claim is cited, that each citation is correct, or that either product has better research quality. Give both products the same representative question and conflicting sources. Require each decision-changing claim to identify an original source, then open it and check that it supports the claim and does not omit important contrary evidence.

Where must the finished research report go?

ChatGPT Deep Research reports can be downloaded as Markdown, Word, or PDF. Claude's Research guide describes a cited answer but does not document an equivalent one-click research-report export, so treat that workflow as unknown rather than absent. Separately, Claude can create downloadable DOCX and PDF files, but that does not establish that a Research answer has a citation-preserving export path. Test the exact handoff you need and check whether its citations survive the resulting file.

Which connected-source training and retention controls fit private material?

ChatGPT Deep Research uses the same privacy settings as regular ChatGPT. OpenAI says individual ChatGPT content may train models unless the user opts out, while Business and Enterprise inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. Data synced directly from connected Google apps is not used to train generalized models except when it is submitted as feedback, manually copied or uploaded into a conversation, or included in a ChatGPT response. Anthropic says Claude Free, Pro, and Max chats may be used when the user chooses model improvement, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit training opt-in; raw connector content is excluded, but content copied into the conversation can be included. Claude for Work inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. Both companies say deleted chats are generally removed from back-end systems within 30 days, subject to stated legal, security, de-identification, feedback, or Usage Policy exceptions. Set the controls before adding private research material and review the exceptions rather than treating a training opt-out as a deletion policy.
